Why did Lincoln mess up a great naming tradition?

I think all manufacturers are heading in that direction. As all the cool car names have been used, it's becoming increasingly difficult to come up with names with panache and style. That's when they throw in the letters. At least Mercedes-Benz has stayed ahead of the curve and have pretty much have used just letters and numbers for their car's series.
